PETA believes that animals have rights and deserve to have their best interests taken into consideration, regardless of whether they are useful to humans. Like you, they are capable of suffering and have an interest in leading their own lives; therefore, they are not ours to use—for food, clothing, entertainment, experimentation, or any other reason. About Us

The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) has worked since 1954 to promote the protection of all animals. With nearly ten million members and constituents, The HSUS is the nation’s largest and most powerful animal protection organization, working in the United States and abroad to defend the interests of animals. We celebrate the human-animal bond, and we fight animal cruelty and abuse in all of its forms.

We work to reduce suffering and to create meaningful social change for animals by advocating for public policies to protect animals, investigating cruelty and working to enforce existing laws, educating the public about the issues, and conducting hands-on programs, such as assisting animals when disasters strike. Our major campaigns target four primary issues: 1) factory farming, 2) animal fighting and other forms of animal cruelty, 3) the fur trade, and 4) inhumane sport hunting practices.

Our other campaigns take on puppy mills, the private ownership of exotic animals as pets, greyhound racing, and particularly unacceptable animal research and testing practices, such as the use of great apes in research. Our two signature programs—Pets for Life and Wild Neighbors—celebrate the benefits of the bond between people and animals who live with us or in our communities, and teach people how to solve human/animal conflicts humanely. And we provide direct care for thousands of animals at our sanctuaries, wildlife rehabilitation centers, and mobile veterinary clinics.

Throughout this site you can learn more about The HSUS and how you can support our work. A humane society starts with you.

Our Pets for Life Program

If you're lucky enough to share your life with a pet, you already know that the relationship requires commitment and perseverance. Surely you remember when you last came home to a chewed up pair of slippers (or worse!), a litter box accident, or an eerily quiet house thanks to your dog's "Hairy Houdini" escape act.

Pets provide us with unconditional love and companionship, and even lower our blood pressure. But sometimes they can make our blood boil when they act like, well, animals. Sadly, for too many animals exhibiting behaviors their caregivers can't deal with, their fate is tragic: They are given up, or given up on.

Behavior Tip Sheets

Behavior problems top the list of reasons for pet relinquishment. Thousands of other pets are given up because of lifestyle changes, such as the birth of a child, or human health issues, such as family members with allergies or HIV/AIDS. Still others are given up because their caregivers couldn't find animal-friendly rental housing, or because their owners simply had unrealistic expectations about what it meant to care for a pet.

For all these reasons, The Humane Society of the United States has launched the Pets for Life program. Our goal: to curtail the numbers of animals relinquished to shelters—or otherwise given up on—because of breaks in the human-animal bond. To achieve this goal, we're developing a variety of programs to empower pet caregivers to solve the problems that threaten their relationships with pets.

  • Our extensive collection of information sheets helps caregivers meet the many challenges of pet ownership.

  • Our outreach efforts to physicians and other health professionals seek to combat some of the myths surrounding health problems related to pet ownership.

  • Our Pets for Life National Training Center, supported by a consortium of foundations and companies, teaches animal-sheltering professionals how to institute stress-reduction programs for shelter animals, to offer dog-training and pet-parenting classes to the public, and even to set up telephone helplines for frustrated pet owners.

  • Finally, our programs and information promoting spaying and neutering, including our Spay/Neuter Clinic & Animal Wellness Center in Dallas remain at the foundation of our efforts to reduce overpopulation.
