                 Keeping CatNip Fresh

The aroma of catnip loses potency over time. To keep

kitty's catnip toys fresh, store them in a plastic

container and take them out for a special play session

two or three times a week

 'The Tinkling Of A Bell'

Putting a bell on a cat does not protect neighborhood

birds, and can drive a cat crazy. Studies show that

belled cats simply learn how to hunt more quietly and

efficiently. But meanwhile, the tinkling sound of the

bell is annoying and disorienting to the cat, who

relies heavily on her sense of hearing to get around.

               Rental Homes, Condos And Pets

How many more millions of dogs and cats would have homes
if more rental properties and Condos allowed them? The
fact is, about half of all renters have pets. Landlords
can have fewer vacancies if they allow furry tenants. To
encourage pet-friendly landlords, the Humane Society of
the United States has launched
www.rentwithpets.org.
Landlords can use the Web site to find sample leases and
pet policies, as well as tips on identifying responsible
pet owners. For pet owners, the Humane Society suggests
developing a "pet resume," complete with references from
a former landlord and your veterinarian.

                  Cats and Sunburn

Cats  normally like to bask in sunshine, but in very hot
weather cats have been known to get sunburned. We all know
how painful this can be and cats can experience  the same
pain. Sunburn usually affects cats with lighter coats, but
all cats can suffer especially in areas where the coat is
thinner such as the nose, tips of the ears and the tummy.

At least as mentioned this is painful, but prolonged
exposure can cause a form of cancer known as squamous
cell carcinoma. Early signs of this include sores that
don't heal and or keep bleeding. Treatment is generally
by surgery or chemotherapy. Although cats generally like
to sit in the sun, precautions can be taken in hot sunny
conditions by the application of cat sunscreens on ears
and noses.

How to Choose a Cat Breeder

The best recommendation for a good breeder occurs through
word of mouth. Ask your friends, family and coworkers for
recommendations. Speak to your veterinarian as she may
have valuable information on file. In general, catteries
that are certified by the Cat Fanciers of America volun-
tarily adhere to a strict set of standards.

------------------------------------------------------------

 Considering a Pure Bred?

Before acquiring a pure bred cat, spend some time research-
ing which breed will best suit you. Consider its energy
level as some breeds like the Abyssinian and Tonkinese are
considered high-energy breeds. Long-haired breeds will
require daily brushing and regular grooming. Certain breeds
are prone to genetic problems that you may need to be
prepared for in terms of bills, time, and emotional energy.

                          Thinking Ahead....

If you live alone, make a plan concerning who will care for
your cat if something happens to you. Give a neighbor a key
to your home, and carry a card with you that says you have
a cat at home who must be taken care of, and whom to
contact.

Your Cat May Enjoy Greens Now and Then

If your cat likes to nibble your houseplants, try growing
a pot of kitty grass instead. Seed mixtures just for cats
are available at many pet supply stores. Your cat might
also appreciate a little snack of chopped lettuce.

Strings And Ribbons are a NO! NO!

Strings, ribbon and yarn may be fun for kitty to play with,
but they can be hazardous if swallowed. Your cat can get
dangerously tangled up, as well. If you and your cat like
to play string games, make sure the string is safely put
away after every game

                     ALLERGIES TO CATS

People who are allergic to cats are actually allergic
to cat saliva or to cat dander. If the resident cat is
bathed regularly the allergic people tolerate it better.

------------------------------------------------------------

                TAKE ME HOME!

Like birds, cats have a homing ability that uses it's
biological clock, the angle of the sun, and the Earth's
magnetic field. A cat taken far from it's home can
return to it. But if a cat's owners move far from it's
home, the cat can't find them.

                       Wheat Grass

Wheat grass is a safe and convenient source of enjoyment
for your cat. They enjoy the succulent taste of the grass.
You can grow wheat grass in a sunny window sill and let
your cat graze as often as she desires. However, some
house plants are toxic to cats, so be aware that cats can
be attracted to them as well.

------------------------------------------------------------

                    Grow Your Own

If your cat enjoys catnip, consider growing your own. To
plant outdoors, sow seeds in a sunny location in the early
spring. Seeds are available in most garden stores or mail-
order catalogs. Catnip will grow back again next year if
the winter is not too harsh.

June 2007 Stories, Facts & Tips on the World's Most Popular Pet The Cat

                  Boy So Soon

Beware that your cute little male kitten will reach sexual
maturity very fast. By six months of age he will be fully
capable of impregnating a female cat. If you want to avoid
having more kittens, neuter your male cat between five and
six months of age.

                   Weaning Your Kitten

In nature, mother cat starts bringing solid food to
her kittens about 4 weeks of age. This is a good
time to introduce kittens to small amounts of canned
food or fully moistened dry food. By seven weeks of
age, the kittens should be able to eat dry food.

 FROM THE "CAT SCRAPS" FILE:

Abraham Lincoln loved cats. He had four of them while
he lived in the White House

                    Diet and Exercise

A balanced diet and exercise are important in ensuring
your pet's good health. Obesity leads to serious pet
health problems.

Don't feed your pet table scraps.

Your pet should always have fresh drinking water available.

Keep you pets away from potentially poisonous items, such
as: chocolate, antifreeze, house plants, pesticides and
medications.

                      Tunnel of Play

To stimulate your cat's love of exploration, consider tap-
ing together a series of boxes. Cats love to explore dark
tunnels and byways. Start with two typical square boxes
and cut two kitty sized holes in the sides. Hook them
together with a long rectangular box. You can get as
elaborate as you like, but make sure your cat can navigate
the inner depths easily and create some windows for light
.

FROM THE "CAT SCRAPS" FILE:

                Law of Selective Listening

Although a cat can hear a can of tuna being opened a mile
away, she can't hear a simple command three
feet away

                        Your Talkative Cat

Vocalizing is one way for your cat to communicate with
you and with other animals. Some cats "talk" more than
others,( Gracie "talks" all the time) but most cats do
make noise some of the time. We're all familiar with
the meaning of hissing and growling, but there are also
many other sounds that your cat is capable of, and a
variety of reasons for vocalizing.

                       Breed Tendency

Oriental breeds, such as the Siamese, are known to be
very vocal. If your cat has a pointed face and a long,
lean body, chances are she has some oriental heritage,
so "talking" may be a part of her character. Avoid
giving her any attention when she is vocal because
this will only encourage the vocal behavior. Instead,
give her attention when she is quiet.

                     Seeking Attention

Some cats "talk" because they know they'll get a
reaction. People may talk back, feed her, yell at her,
pick her up and lock her in another room, or pick her
up and soothe her. All of these responses will encourage
an attention-seeking cat. To discourage this behavior,
simply ignore your cat when she does this, and when she
is quiet, pour on the love, feed her or give her some
treats. This will teach your cat which behaviors you
would like her to continue.

     Understanding Cat Aggression Towards People

Cat owners sometimes have difficulty understanding why
their cats seem friendly and content one minute and may
suddenly bite and scratch them the next. Aggressive
behaviors are part of the normal behavioral patterns of
almost any animal species. Cat bites are seldom reported,
but probably occur more frequently than dog bites.
Aggressive cats can be dangerous, so attempting to resolve
a cat aggression problem often requires assistance from an
animal behavior specialist who is knowledgeable about cat
behavior.

          FROM THE "CAT SCRAPS" FILE:

A cat sees the world the way a human with cataracts does -
a little blurry and soft around the edges

              Importance of Dietary Antioxidants

As cats age, it is particularly important to provide
nutrition that enhances healthy immune function to help
them respond rapidly to disease. Dietary antioxidants
have an important role in helping support healthy immune
function.

Dietary antioxidants, including vitamins A, E and C and
beta-carotene, work together to help minimize damage to
cells from oxidation. A lack of these nutrients in the
diet could result in damage to the wall or membrane of
cells throughout the body

             No Chicken Bones for Kitty

Do not be tempted to give chicken bones to your cat. She
may very well be able to handle the small bones of a
rodent, but chicken bones pose a distinct hazard. Their
tendency to splinter can cause gastrointestinal perfora-
tion and obstruction.

            FROM THE "CAT SCRAPS" FILE:

When a domestic cat goes after mice, about one pounce
in three results in a catch.

Getting The Right Carrier Is Important

There are many boxes and baskets available for transport-
ing cats.  It is best not to get the solid sided version
as these are not too pleasant for the animals to enter.
A wire basket with top opening for ease of access may not
look so attractive but has better vision all around and
is easy to use.

Does Your Cat Have The Sniffles?

If So, take it into the room with you when you shower.
The steam will help its breathing.

          FROM THE "CAT SCRAPS" FILE:

are the same.

"Of all God's creatures there is only one that cannot
be made the slave of the leash. That one is the cat.
If man could be crossed with the cat, it would improve
man, but it would deteriorate the cat." -- Mark Twain

                  Break Away

Many cat owners like to keep collars on their cats for
identification purposes. Break away collars are recom-
mended for all collar-wearing cats, but especially
those who go outdoors.

                    Dilution Solution

If your cat has urinated on the carpet, concentrate your
initial efforts on soaking up as much as possible of the
kitty piddle. Then continue physically removing even more
urine using water before treating the area with any
chemical product. Water is safe and will dilute the con-
centrated piddle and help carry it out of the carpet. Do
not use any other cleaning products until you have
thoroughly diluted the urine pollution.

May 2007 Stories, Facts & Tips on the World's Most Popular Pet The Cat

                 Naughty Kitty!

If you cat tends to think that you are a Kitty Treat,
when he takes his next bite, just say "No!" (don't hit
him) and walk away from him. Totally ignore him! Sounds
easy, but it really works for most cats. Here is a good
way to train your cat not to do something (getting on
tables, etc.). Keep a spray bottle of water handy. When
you see your cat doing something that he shouldn't be
doing...squirt water at him in the face. They really
hate that!

phrase is 'Here Kitty, Kitty' with 'You Stupid Cat' not

Chocolate IS A DEFINITE No! No!

Never give chocolate to your pet! Chocolate is pure poison
to our furry friends! Feeding this sweet treat for humans
to your cat could be fatal. Please pass this warning on to
your children.

                 Electric Blanket Caution

If you are considering placing a heating pad in your cat's
bed for warmth, be sure to exercise caution. Cover it with
a towel and check it periodically to make sure it does not
get too hot. An alternative is a warm water-heating pad
through which warm water is circulated at a constant
temperature.

                      Write It Down

Before making a visit to the veterinarian with your cat
consider writing down your questions on a piece of paper.
It is not uncommon to forget key questions and concerns
once in the exam room. Your veterinarian will respect
your preparations and appreciate you as a responsible
pet owner.

         Some Signs Of Plant Poisoning

If your cat is showing any one of these symptoms it is
possible it has eaten a poisonous plant. Plant poisoning
is dangerous and medical attention should be sought
immediately. Try to identify the plant that has been
ingested and have its name available when you contact
your vet.

Here are some signs of plant poisoning and what to do
if you suspect it.

                                                  Cats and Arthritis

For overweight pets, losing weight will help lighten the
load on those achy joints. A 20 minute walk several times
a day can reduce the progression of arthritis. If it's
cold outside, let them sleep inside. Make sure they are
provided with soft bedding to reduce discomfort. Moist
heat applied for 20 minutes twice a day can be a great
                              comfort.

                     Cat in a Tree:

Cats will more than likely come down on their own. Leave
them alone to make their way down. Give them an entire
day to do so. Tempt them with their favorite strong-smell-
ing food. If the cat is injured, wearing a leash that
could choke them, or hasn't come down in a day, you need
to climb up and get them, whether up the tree itself, or
with a ladder. Grab them by the skin on the back of the
neck and make your first attempt at reaching them a good
one - they may flee further up the tree. The Human Society
may be able to assist you if you are not able to reach the
cat yourself.

                        Safety Net

When bringing a new baby into your home, be sure to pro-
tect her from your cat. Although your feline is unlikely
to cause your baby any harm your cat may be very curious
about the new arrival. Consider draping a commercially
available crib-netting over the crib to prevent unwanted
visitors into the baby's bed.

 FROM THE "CAT SCRAPS" FILE:

Cats can't taste sweets

                                                                         All cats like fish

There is no particular food that all cats like. This is
why cat foods are available in a variety of flavors and
textures. Once you find nutritionally complete and
balanced cat food your cat enjoys, stay with it. Frequent
diet changes may create a finicky eater and cause diges-
tive upsets. Be certain the package label states that the
product has undergone feeding trials in accordance with
the Association of American Feed Control officials (AAFCO)
                                                         protocol.

                       CATS EYES

Cats can see an ant at a distance of six meters(!). While
looking straight ahead they can also see sideways in an
angle of 45 degrees, but only 2-dimensional. In pitch-dark-
ness their eyes become more like a kind of ears: the pupils
pick up acoustic vibrations.

              Our Nosey little Furry Friend

A cat's nose has 17 million nerve cells, which he uses to
trace all smells/aromas in his environment. Even the food
they eat is chosen by the smell. A cat who has a cold,
doesn't eat because he isn't hungry, but because he can't
smell the food. Comparison: a dog's nose has 147 million
nerve cells; we have 'only' 5 million nerve cells in our
nose.

                          Grass

Cats and dogs alike may eat grass from time to time. Some
believe that it is because they have an upset stomach and
are trying to induce vomiting. This is not likely the
case. Many dogs and cats seem to enjoy the taste of grass,
but grass tends to get hung up in the back of the throat
and esophagus, triggering a gag reflex.

                        Slow Change

If you change your overweight cat's diet to a lower calorie
food, make the change gradually over a seven to ten day
period. Add a small amount of the lower calorie food to the
diet currently being fed. Each day increase the amount of
lower calorie food and decrease the current diet until the
changeover is completed. This helps avoid digestive upsets
frequently caused by sudden diet changes.

                       Cat Sleeping:

Cats have three kinds of sleep: the brief nap, the longer
light sleep, and the deep sleep. The brief nap is the one
we call a "catnap". The light sleep and the longer sleep
alternate during those periods of time when a cat settles
down for something more than a catnap. When a cat is ready
for some sleep, it begins in a phase of light sleep that
lasts for about half an hour. Then, the cat enters the
period of deep sleep, which lasts for 6 or 7 minutes.
After this, the cat will return to light sleep and
alternate these two phases until he or she wakes up.

During deep sleep a cat will dream, with twitchings and
quivering of the ears, paws, and tail. The mouth may make
some sucking movement. There may be some vocalizations --
growls, purrs, and other sounds. There are also bursts of
rapid eye movement during the deep sleep.

A kitten, during the first month, experiences only deep
sleep, which lasts for about 12 hours total each day.
After the first month, the kitten quickly switches to
the adult pattern of sleep.

Cats are super-sleepers, sleeping about 16 hours a day
total. Most mammals do not sleep this much, which puts
the cat into a special category -- that of the efficient
hunter. The cat is so efficient at obtaining food, that
it has time to spare, so it has time for more sleep.
Other carnivores, like dogs, have to spend much more time
running around, searching and chasing, to obtain their
food. But the cat sits, waits, stalks a little, kills,
and eats. That done, the cat grooms and takes a nap. Our
housecats have even less to do, and they don't have to
fit more activities into their day, so they can still be

              Dogs & Cats Living Together

Though dogs and cats area traditionally viewed as adver-
saries, they can actually make great companions for one
another. Bringing a feline into a canine household-or
vice-versa-can be trying for both animals and owners, so

and give him food treats for sitting quietly as the cat
walks by. This way, you're rewarding Fido for non-
predatory behavior. Be sure to keep your cat's claws
trimmed, so that if trouble does arise, it can't do much
damage to the dog.
