On the Road

From http://nathanwinograd.blogspot.com

Our director traveled across the country trying to reform animal shelters, offering alternatives to killing, and telling the story of hope embodied in the No Kill philosophy. He found an animal sheltering system in crisis--filthy conditions, cruel treatment, and directors who found it easier to kill than do what is necessary to stop it. But he also found hope. And it is that hope that will pave the way for a No Kill nation.

April is Prevention of Animal Cruelty Month.

Greetings Feral Paws Rescue from the Editor!

Every cat deserves love. As the owner of two cats, it’s hard for me to imagine treating my pets with anything other than kindness and respect. Unfortunately, that’s not always the case for all cats. That’s why April is Prevention of Animal Cruelty Month.

Cruelty to animals is a topic that’s been on my mind lately, since three of my favorite TV shows recently featured jokes involving cruelty to cats. Click here to read my article “Cat Cruelty Is No Joke.”

Fortunately, there are ways for us cat lovers to help prevent animal cruelty. Volunteering at an animal shelter, taking in a foster kitty or adopting a cat are fabulous ways to start. To find out how you can volunteer to help cats in your town, visit our Cat Resources section.

If you or someone you know recently adopted a kitten or cat, why not send an e-card to celebrate the occasion? See all CatChannel e-cards. Click here>>

If you don’t have the time to volunteer or the space to take in another cat, there are still ways you can help. Click here for eight easy steps you can take to make sure no pet suffers from animal cruelty.

Together, we can make a difference in the fight against animal cruelty.

Meow for now,
Robin Rockey

Light A Candle

Please Light a Candle for all the

dogs & cats
that were killed today in

animal shelters.

In many different traditions lighting candles is a sacred action.

It expresses more than words can express. It has to do

with gratefulness.

From time immemorial, people have lit candles in sacred places.

Why should cyberspace not be sacred?

You may want to begin or end your day by the sacred ritual

of lighting a candle on this website. Or you may want to light a

candle for one of the helpless feral cats at Avenal State Prison

that we are trying to hard to keep out of harmsway. Or just

light a candle for one of the homeless animals that die for

needless reasons at the hands of our animals shelters every day.

Or one that was abused until they died at the hands of

a human owner!  One single guideline is all you need:

Slow down and do it with full attention.

Just click on the area above "light a candle"

BE SURE TO LOOK FOR THESE STATEMENTS OF

REASSURANCE WHEN YOU SHOP!

P&G Kills Each year, thousands of animals die in

Procter & Gamble laboratories -- the victims of

painful, archaic and entirely unnecessary product tests.

Caustic chemicals are forced into the eyes of rabbits

and applied to animals' shaved and raw skin. Animals

sometimes break their necks or backs attempting to

escape the pain. Those that survive are used in yet

additional painful tests ... until they are finally killed.

The victims include rabbits, guinea pigs,

hamsters, ferrets and many other animals.

The Coalition for Consumer Information on Cosmetics

The CCIC promotes a single comprehensive

standard and an internationally recognized

"leaping bunny" logo. We are working with companies

to help make shopping for animal-friendly products

easier and more trustworthy.

Caring Consumer Hundreds of thousands of these animals

are poisoned, blinded, and killed every year in outdated

product tests for cosmetics, personal care products,

household cleaning products, and even fruit juices.

Although more than 500 companies have banned all

animal tests forever, some corporations

(such as Procter & Gamble, Helene Curtis,

SC Johnson & Son and Colgate Palmolive -

just to name a few) still force substances into

animals’ stomachs and drip chemicals into rabbits’

eyes. These tests are not required by law, and they

often produce inaccurate or misleading results—even

if a product has blinded an animal, it can still be marketed

to you. Check this site before you shop!

Humane Charity Seal of Approval

The HCSA is the easiest way for donors to spot

charities that are committed to providing vital

services and care to patients or advancing research

without the use of animals. People who donate to

charities want to know where their money is going.

For many, a key concern is whether their donations

might fund animal experiments. In fact, over 65 percent

of adults recently surveyed said they would be more

likely to donate to a health charity that had a policy

of never funding animal experiments. Over 80 percent

of those under 35 agreed. With a rapidly expanding and

diversifying list of approved charities, the Humane

Charity Seal of Approval is leading the way into a

new era of humane giving.

Talking to Kids About Animal Cruelty
From cats to canaries, from Dobermans to dachshunds, our pets often seem to know how we feel. They comfort us when we're hurt, and make us happy when we're sad. They share our joy, and stay by our side when times are bad. But, sometimes, some people are mean to animals. How do you explain this to a child? http://www.aspca.org/site/PageServer?pagename=cruelty_kidsandcruelty

Dog Fighting: What You Can Do
Although dog fighting is illegal in all 50 states and carries a felony charge in most, there are still a few states in which it is not taken as seriously. If you live in a state where dog fighting is a misdemeanor, write to your legislators and ask them to make this crime a felony. Visit the ASPCA Advocacy Center to find out what the penalty for dog fighting is in your state and how to contact your legislators.
Do your kids have questions about dog fighting? Visit our children’s website,
ASPCA Animaland, for information about dog fighting that’s written especially for kids.
